Another top Chinese leader to visit Lanka

Close on the visit of Chinese Defence Minister Gen Liang Guanglie to Sri Lanka, China’s top political leader Wu Bangguo would visit Colombo this month to firm up the deepening relations between the two countries. Wu, who holds the second rank in the ruling Chinese Communist Party, next only to President Hu Jintao, would visit the island nation as part of his four-nation goodwill tour beginning from September 9 to 23. Besides Sri Lanka, he would be visiting Iran, Myanmar and Fiji. Wu is the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese legislature the National People’s Congress. He would be visiting Colombo on the invitation of Speaker of Sri Lanka’s Parliament, Chamal Rajapaksa. His visit follows the just concluded first ever visit by Chinese Defence Minister Gen Liang. Sri Lanka has emerged as a strong ally of China in the recent years much to the disquiet of India with Beijing courting Colombo with huge financial aid as well as construction of infrastructure projects like Hanbantotta Port.
