DMK requests Centre to support UN resolution on Lanka

A Tamil Nadu constituent of the ruling party in India today made a “firm request” to the Centre to support the US when it moves a fresh Sri Lanka specific resolution at the forthcoming sessions of the UN Human Rights Council. The Press Trust of India said that DMK party chief M. Karunanidhi had recalled a statement by US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State James R Moore in this regard on January 29, where the latter had said Sri Lanka needs to “fulfill its commitments made to its own people.” “It is our firm request that Indian government should support that resolution,” the 88-year-old Karunanidhi said, replying to a set of questions in party mouthpiece ‘Murasoli’. Moore had said his country had decided to sponsor a procedural resolution at the March 2013 sessions of the UNHRC. “The US and the other 23 members of the UNHRC who voted for that resolution in 2012 believe that the government of Sri Lanka needs to fulfill its commitments made to its own people,” Moore had said. ]]>
