Heart attacks are the leading cause of death not only in Sri Lanka but the world over and currently, over 150 persons die due to heart attacks every day across the country.

Of this number, around one third are said to be females who succumb to the disease. According to consultant cardiologist of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) Dr. Ruwan Ekanayake, the lead up to heart attacks in a human being takes place when a person is around 10 years.

He said when a person reaches age 20, the causes are well established in the system so much so that when a person reaches 40 years, she/he is in potential danger of getting a heart attack. It is said that among those who had perished most during the Vietnam War had been youths not exceeding 30 years.
