A three-member high profile delegation from the United States of America is expected to arrive in the Sri Lanka in the coming weeks, on the directive of US President Barack Obama, in the aftermath of the ouster of Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake through an impeachment process, diplomatic sources said. The delegation will comprise three deputy assistant secretaries, who function under Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Robert O. Blake. The deputies are in charge of good governance, democracy and human rights, according to diplomatic sources. US Embassy sources, confirming the pending visit said, they were informed about the visit in the latter part of December following the initial stage of impeachment. “Though it could not be pinpointed the visit instigated solely because of the impeachment, the latter played a bigger role in their basic needs expected to address. They will be focusing on the progress of reconciliation, improvement of human rights condition and democracy in the country. As far as their main target is carrying out background study in view of the UNHRC session in March,” Embassy sources said. According to sources, it is expected the delegation will strictly look into the progress of implementing the recommendations made by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) and the current constitutional and human rights crisis in the country. “Naturally, the US is not bothered about what is occurring in Sri Lanka on day-to-day basis. They will only focus on hiccups in democracy, human rights and good governance,” sources added. It is also said the Obama administration will decide as to how they should react to Sri Lanka in future, based on the comprehensive report the three-member delegation would submit following their visit. Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Presidential Secretary, Lalith Weeratunga, has reportedly told a diplomatic gathering that only 35% of the LLRC recommendations have been implemented by the government so far.]]>
