President of the All Ceylon Hindu Congress (ACHC) boycotted the State-sponsored Thai Pongal Festival at Temple Trees yesterday, citing the plight of the Tamil people in the North and hurtful comments made by certain sections of the SL government. President of the ACHC, Attorney-at-Law, Kandiah Neelakandan said the decision to boycott the State ceremony was taken due to certain comments made by a government minister and as a sign of solidarity with the Tamil people suffering in the North. Neelakandan, justifying his decision to boycott the State function, said “Our people in the North are suffering and the government should take measures to relieve them of their sufferings, instead of spending unnecessarily on such functions. He also pointed out that the students of the University of Jaffna, adversely affected by the recent crackdown, were also suffering and said the government needs to find solutions for their problems instead of spending on State functions. “Therefore, I have decided to boycott the State Thai Pongal Celebrations at the President’s house to express my displeasure and hurt,” he said.]]>
