Jaffna university teachers are not heeding the request of the Sri Lankan army, Jaffna Commander, Major- General Hathurisinghe. Major- General Hathurisinghe has requested the University heads to come to the Palay Army Complex today( 21) morning to discuss the current crisis regarding the university students in Jaffna. Stating that attending such a meeting in an army facility could tantamount to acknowledging military rule in Jaffna and it was not acceptable to do so, the heads of the Arts and Science faculties have politely declined the invitation. Currently the Jaffna university students are on strike, consequent to the clashed which erupted on the 27th of November, when the Sri Lankan military was deployed when the University students had participated a lamp lighting ceremony to commemorate Tamil martyrs and four students taken into custody. Meanwhile, a hunger strike is to take place today( 21) in Jaffna town , demanding from he government the release of arrested university students, freeing of political prisoners and information pertaining to cases of ‘ enforced’ disappearances.
