Six persons killed and around 40 others injured in five separate accidents yesterday, adding to the dramatic escalation of motor traffic accidents this year in Sri Lanka.
One of the accidents claimed the lives of four persons, including two policemen, on the highway that is being constructed in Athurugiriya, early yesterday morning.
Meanwhile, a Sri Lankan army lance corporal was killed and another injured when the motorcycle they were travelling on collided with a private bus. The incident had taken place at around 5 a.m. on the Puttlam Road in the Mavidaluketha area, when the two lance corporals attached to the army band were returning to their base in Anuradhapura after vacation.
Lance Corporal Gamage was killed in the accident, while Lance Corporal Karunaratne had sustained injuries and was admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital.
Lankan police officer said from the beginning of the year to mid September, around 25,000 accidents had been recorded. “Approximately 1,500 persons have been killed in these accidents. All these accidents, however, are not solely due to the fault of the drivers, and even pedestrians are at fault,” he added.
