Tamils set for mass protest in Mullaithivu

The Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) will stage a protest in Kopapulavu, in the Mullaithivu District, over the ‘Resettlement of Tamils’ issue tomorrow.

The protest is scheduled to take place in front of the Mullaithivu divisional secretary office at 12 noon. Former Parliamentarian  and Tamil National People’s Front general secretary S. Gagendran said his party would go ahead with the protest in spite of whatever obstacle is created.

The protest is organised when a team from the office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights visited some of the areas where the final war took place between the Sri Lankan army and the LTTE.

The UN delegation, in Sri Lanka following the adoption of a resolution at the Human Rights Council in March, had also met several officials in Mullaitivu.

Reports from the north said that the UN team had visited Mullivaikal and Anandapuram, two areas where some of the most bitter fighting took place.

In Kilinochchi, the UN team had met government officials and discussed the resettlement process and other related issues.
