Sources revealed that in 2012, the number of cases involving rape of women and underage girls in Sri Lanka has gone up considerably sources told to the Colombo media. According to these sources the cases of rape of women in general has increased by 33 percent in 2012 compared to the year 2011, where 1440 cases of rape of women had been reported in the country. They said that number had increased to 1920 in 2012. These sources also said that out of 1920 cases of rape that had taken place in 2012, 1608 had involved children and underage girls. In that context of all the cases of rape that had taken place last year, 84 percent of them had involved underage girls.
