The Local Authorities Election Amendment Bill and the Local Authorities Special Provisions Bill have been adopted in Sri Lankan parliament yesterday (10th). The new bill would completely abolish preferential voting system for local government bodies.

A mixed voting system in which 70% representatives will be elected through First-Past-the Post system and 30% from Proportional Representation system would be introduced through these bills.

There had been several amendments proposed by Members and the bills were adopted on condition that they would be debated again.
