Over 1,800 underage girls were raped in Sri Lanka last year, according to police records.
The records also indicate that of these cases of reported sexual abuse of underage girls 1,653 cases (91%) had been investigated and solved and appropriate action taken.
According to police records during the year 2012, 602 underage girls had been subjected to serious sexual violations and the police had taken action with regard to 507 of these complaints.
However the police claim that the majority of the sexual violations committed against under aged girls had taken place as a result of relationships. Even though sexual acts may have been committed with the consent of the girls, since they are underage it is considered statutory rape.
