The convener of the Sri Lankan Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) Sanjeewa Bandara was arrested yasterday, the Sri Lankan police said.

They said the student leader was picked up by sleuths from the Colombo Crime Division from a location in the city.

He is to face charges of assault, inciting violence and damage to public property during a public street protest in late August where four policemen also sustained injuries.

Human rights defenders and student activists in Sri Lanka face a climate of fear, intimidation and threats.
