Sri Lanka warned at Geneva sessions

Sri Lanka’s role in human rights has been heavily condemned at the recently concluded Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the 14th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) say reports. Ms. Karen Elizabeth Pierce, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the United Nations Office responding to Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe’s speech has accused the government of attacks and intimidation of journalists, human rights defenders and legal professionals.

The reports also state that the UK also warned Sri Lanka against legal or political immunity for those responsible for attacks as it would then have to face the consequences. The government was also strongly advised not to target those cooperating with UN mechanisms.

The UK has demanded a thorough investigation into alleged grave breaches of international humanitarian law during the armed conflict stating that it was not satisfied with the progress in the ongoing investigations into accountability issues.
