The Swiss authorities had prevented Sri Lanka’s Kotte Mayor Janaka Ranawaka from staging a protest outside the UN Human Rights Council building in Geneva last week while the 22nd session of the Council was underway.
Ranawaka told to The Sunday Leader that he was prevented from entering Switzerland via Italy where he was on a visit to attend a Mayor’s conference.
Ranawaka said that he had attempted to visit Geneva with a Sri Lankan delegation to stage a demonstration against moves to censure Sri Lanka at the Council but was blocked at the Italy – Switzerland border.
“We were told at the border that the Swiss government had obtained a court order against staging protests outside the UN in Geneva. So we were told to go back to Italy,” he said.
The Mayor said that he was to travel to Geneva with a group of Sri Lankans from Italy but he went back to Italy after being stopped at the border and returned to Sri Lanka.
