Sri Lankan Universities closed indefinitely

The Sri Lankan Minister of Higher Education says all universities except Medical faculties have been closed yesterday until further notice, the Sri Lankan Government Information Department reported. The decision follows a strike called by the teaching staff at universities. Some 21 universities will remain shut until further notice, the Higher Education Ministry said. The Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) has been striking work since July 4 over their demand for higher wages and better facilities. They advocate raising expenditure on education to 6 per cent of the island’s GDP. The protests by academics, which started last year, was stalled by talks held with the government. FUTA says no satisfactory resolution was offered by the government. The government accuses the FUTA of being politically motivated.]]>
