Tamil newspaper Uthayan’s Kilinochchi office was attacked earlier this week for the 32nd time, but the authorities have failed to apprehend a single perpetrator to date, for any of the attacks committed so far, Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Propaganda Secretary, Pubudu Jagoda said yesterday.
Addressing a media briefing, Jagoda claimed reports of media harassment are increasing at alarming frequency, especially as the Tamil newspaper Uthayan’s Kilinochchi office was attacked earlier this …
…week, making it the 32nd time that particular publication had come under attack. Citing numerous incidents taken against the media in the recent past, trade union and student activist, Jagoda, charged the government of dictatorially repressing all who speak up against the government, as well as those who fight for better living conditions.
“I think it’s pretty obvious as to who is behind the scene in carrying out attacks against the media. Even yesterday (4) a reporter was taken in for questioning by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over an article he had written about the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS).
It’s not only the media, but student activists are also targeted. Six student unions from the Sabaragamuwa University have been banned from the university, while some student leaders have been suspended indefinitely – purely because they conducted a meeting of the students’ union,” Jagoda charged.
He urged the public to stand up against the government’s repression and assured the FSP’s fullest support towards joint protest campaigns in this regard.
