UN admits it failed to protect Tamil civilians

The final version of a leaked UN report confirms the organisation failed to protect civilians in the last months of Sri Lanka’s bloody civil war, BBC reports.

“This finding will have profound implications,” UN chief Ban Ki-moon said on Wednesday.

A senior panel will advise Mr Ban on how to prevent the system breakdowns that led to failure in Sri Lanka.

The government and Tamil rebels are accused of war crimes in the brutal conflict which ended in May 2009.
