US ambassador Michele Sison is out of the country and the embassy would take up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs when she returns to the island, US Embassy Spokesperson, Christopher Elms, said when Colombo media asked him about the summoning of the US Ambassador by the Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry over a travel note issued by the US Department of State to US citizens visiting Sri Lanka.
He added that the External Affairs Ministry has been informed and the embassy will take up the matter once the Ambassador returns. Ambassador Sison will return to the island today.
US citizens have also been advised against travel on public buses in Sri Lanka; as passengers can be targets of criminal activity and bus drivers do not all obey driving regulations.
Travellers, especially women, should consider travelling with other people when possible, the travel information notice said.
