The Trincomalee Urban Council has decided to suspend the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the US Embassy in Colombo to open a US corner in Trincomalee.
Secretary of the Urban Council Abdul Latif Mohammad Nafeel said that the Sri Lankan External Affairs Ministry had informed the Council that the deal was unacceptable.
He said that the Eastern Provincial Council had been informed in order to obtain clearance to continue with the MOU. The US Embassy had signed the deal with the Trincomalee Urban Council recently and the Embassy said that it had also signed similar deals to open information centers in Kandy and Jaffna.
Meanwhile the External Affairs Ministry Secretary Karunatilaka Amunugama said that a special investigation has been launched into the MOU.
The investigation will also cover American corners opened in Kandy and Jaffna, Amunugama said.
He said that the UC had no right to sign an MOU with a foreign embassy without informing the External Affairs Ministry.
“The Ministry will seek information from the local Council about the deals they had signed with the US Embassy. We have not sought information from the US Embassy as yet,” he said.He said that an official from the MEA has been appointed to investigate the MOU signed with the local councils and a report will be submitted on the findings.
