Half of the Sri Lankan will suffer from diabetes by 2015


The Sri Lankan Health Ministry warned yesterday that half of the population in the country will suffer from diabetes by 2015, with a record of three deaths per day at present. He said according to statistics, of the total population in the country, 10.2 % suffer from diabetes, of this 18% in urban and semi urban areas 8% rural areas. In addition 15% of school children also suffer from diabetes. He said the main cause of diabetes is consuming unhealthy food and alcohol, excessive amounts of food containing sugar, physical inactivity and stress. He also said students neglect their breakfast and get used to fast food, soft drinks and milk packets which increases the amount of sugar consumed, specially flavoured milk products which have a sugar content of 18%.  ]]>
