Tamil fishermen in Mulathivu district say that even though they gave their licensed land to Sinhala fishermen during war time with the knowledge of the military, after the end of the war time, they have not yet been given back to them.
According to them the amount of land that has been deprived of them amounts to approximately 800 acres.
They say that because the military officers who received their paddy fields during that time are no longer serving in the area, it has been difficult for them to retrieve their land back.
They also say that even though they had made countless requests from the Weli Oya AGA, Mahaweli development officers and the GA Mulathivuntongive them back thier licensed land, all of them have been in vein.
When inquired, Mulathice GA Mr. Nagalingam Wedanayagam said that these land which had been conveyed through a special agreement could only be returned by the secretary of the land ministry or the land commissioner general.
He further stated that the relevant authorities were informed upon the request of the farmers.
