The Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has made a false diplomatic communication to the US State Department in order to get a scholarship for military training for Major General Sudantha Ranasinghe. The request for the scholarship for the Major General was turned down by the US following war crimes allegations.
The US had rejected the request for the military training scholarship on the basis that he was responsible for the alleged war crimes that had taken place in the Wanni since he played an important role during the Wanni operation. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had told the US that Ranasinghe was not involved in the Wanni operation in any way. He was then granted the scholarship. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa told the media that the US always makes its decisions based on wrong information.
Our sources say that Sudantha Ranasinghe was directly involved in the Wanni operation as a brigadier at the time. Ranasinghe had served as the chief group officer operations at the Wanni Security Forces Headquarters during the 2008-2009 period. Current Army Commander, Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya was the Wanni Commander at the time. It was Brigadier Sudantha Ranasinghe who served as his main coordinating officer.
The Army officer who gave us the information said that if Sudantha Ranasinghe was not involved in the Wanni operation as stated by Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, then the current Army Commander, Jagath Jayasuriya had also not played any role in the Wanni operation.
The officer further stated that statements by Jayasuriya that he rejects allegations of war crimes are false. (LNW)
